Safety Expo 2009
5th Annual Statewide Safety Training & Construction Management Expo
April 7-9, 2009 – Cosumnes River College, Sacramento
“Forget the Title, What About the Move to Cosumnes River College?”
Change is Good - For the third time, Expo is relocated, due in large part to logistics and scheduling. Having sessions in true classrooms provides advantages to attendees, presenters and organizers. Registrants receive the feel and privacy of taking classes in rooms where sessions aren’t marred by space constraints, available desks for taking notes, and competing sounds from other workshops which make the experience of learning more conducive – a basic but crucial setting that is offered to presenters and attendees. Presenters especially welcome the class environment with built-in audio visual, computers and LCD projectors all provided, and planners embraced it because there was no major concern with ensuring the size of class rooms to the number of attendees. The technical building alone was extremely well-suited and spacious enough to support the CPR and equipment training sessions, and posed easy access to and from registration and hands-on training areas.
No VIP Forum but the Chief of Cal/OSHA Speaks – The Special Projects track brought Expo attendees several options to choose from with “Avoiding Project Failure in a Difficult Economy” with Marilyn Klinger, Sedgwick, Detert, Moran & Arnold followed by Michael Alvarez, Cal/OSHA Consultation – “Staying on the Cutting Edge with Cal/OSHA.” Also presented was the EEEC Panel: “Inspections – What to Expect” – David Dorame, Department of Industrial Relations and panelists representing DLSE, DOSH, EDD, CSLB, and DOL.
Attendees took the opportunity to learn more about the EEEC, rights and responsibilities under state law, and to ask questions of the panelists regarding the law enforcement unit conducting unannounced inspections on matters such as labor law and health and safety violations – one industry the EEEC is currently target is the construction industry. This presentation segued to the “View From the Top” with introductory remarks by John Duncan, Director of the California Department of Industrial Relations; presented by Len Welsh, Chief, California Division of Occupational Safety and Health. (Len Welsh’s appearance courtesy of Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc. (ABC) – Golden Gate Chapter). The seminar provided attendees with an overview of new regulations and hot button issues including insight into new regulations and legislation coming down the pipe. It also reviewed industry trends and statistics including heat illness, fall protection and other “most cited” issues.
Exhibiting Inside and Out - Exhibitors and suppliers found ease and convenience with the trade show held in the campus gymnasium; there was ample space for static displays outside on the courtyard strategically located between the Learning Resource Center where the majority of classes were held and the gym. Planners also extended space opportunities for tabletop displays in the outside breeze-way in close proximity to registration. Larger equipment was placed in the parking lot for the benefit of attendees accomplishing their hands-on equipment training and coming and going to the event.
Request for CEUs - Expo announced that Los Rios Community College District would offer Continuing Education Units (CEUs). The associated CEU credits were made available for each session offered at the event – CEUs were optional and not mandatory, but for those folks who require CEU accreditation, the opportunity was made available to them at a very nominal fee.
Culinary Program Caters Lunch at “Center Court” - Food has always been on the forefront of attendee’s minds and Cosumnes allowed planners to tap-into the Culinary Arts Academy for food and beverage needs. Arrangements were made in advance to secure the culinary folks to cater lunches on all three days of the event at one inclusive price of $10 per lunch – every dollar spent on food was turned over to the academy. Barbecue grills were fired up, catering students served up hamburgers, sandwiches, provided taco bars and pasta stations for attendees to break for lunch – refreshments and coffee was served albeit late, but Expo attendees posed a huge demand for coffee and pastries at the crack of dawn when the registration process was at its peak – organizers now know better than to not have coffee provided first thing in the morning, and will work more diligently to ensure that coffee service will be up and running to satisfy contractor attendees!
