4th Annual Expo – Construction Management & Safety Training – April 1-3, 2008 – Sacramento State University

It’s All in the Name and What About the Economy..?

Once again, based on industry feedback and recommendations, organizers modified the name of the Expo in order to continue incorporating the popular construction management session offerings – the official conference title and tagline for the 2008 Expo became the “Annual Statewide Expo – Safety Training & Construction Management. “  Along with the name change, there were subtle changes to the program.  For the first time, the trade show and sponsorship components were combined giving all sponsorship levels the opportunity to take advantage of exhibiting or donating their exhibit space to other entities.  This format placed tables in lieu of booth space to be strategically located throughout all three levels of the University Union Building enabling vendors to gain better and more direct access to attendees passing to and from sessions.  The supplier visibility to attendees was a welcome, cost effective and positive format change.Session Sign

The California Industry Education Foundation (CIEF) sponsored the 2008 VIP Forum, “Cal/OSHA Accident/Injury Investigation Process, Multi-Employer Worksites and Criminal Prosecution: How Does This Affect You?”  More than 100 industry professionals participated in this presentation that reviewed and discussed the legal ramifications of criminal prosecution and multi-employer liability.  The panel was an excellent representation of principals within the industry that were highly experienced and qualified to address questions posed by the audience.  (Panel: Michael Alvarez, Regional Manager, Cal/OSHA Consultation Service; Michael Donlon, Senior Safety Engineer, Cal/OSHA Compliance Assistance, David Donnel, Esq., Robert D. Peterson Law Corporation; Gary McIver, Associate Safety Engineer, Sacramento District Office, Cal/OSHA Enforcement, and John Vacek, Deputy District Attorney, Yuba County.

Expo Awards Innovations in Safety - The Safety Innovation Awards became another enhancement to the Expo program – the purpose of the award is to recognize companies whose products or procedures have or will significantly improve safe practices in the construction industry.  The three finalists for 2008’s Safety Innovation Awards were announced at the conclusion of the VIP Forum:

  • McCarthy Building Companies, Inc.Fall Rescue Kit
  • SawStopAccident Detection
  • University of California, San FranciscoThe Overhead Drilling Project

The Economy Spirals - This was a compelling year for the Expo event on many levels given the fact that the downward spiraling economy was having a major impact on the construction industry, particularly in the residential arena.  Attendee numbers decreased in the amount of people registering for the event, but even the slippage of registrants didn’t affect the overall success of the Expo – organizations that released part of their workforce to attend the training sessions realized the enormous value and quality training could be had for $35 – thanks in large part to Expo sponsors, exhibitors and presenters for their help in making it possible to pass-on this affordable cost in order to continue offering safety education and training to those that make this industry their primary profession.
