Safety Expo 2006

06_PBSxflyer2nd Annual Pacific Builders Safety Expo

“Where Safety Training Comes First”

February 6-7, 2006 – Cal Expo, Sacramento

“The Expo’s 2nd Year Grows Safety Training Program and Attendance”

What Attendees Want - One of the primary goals of The 2nd Annual Expo was to satisfy the educational needs of the contractor community, so planners incorporated recommended improvements based on feed-back from the 2005 event surveys in the staging of the 2006 Expo.  The evaluation process proved to be crucial in the planning of the 2nd Expo.  First, the timing of the event was ‘rescheduled’ from April to February – it was initially thought that a Spring conference would interfere with contractor’s work schedules.  The high profile Cal Expo was retained, but in lieu of eight buildings, all the training sessions and workshops were kept in one building.   Expo classes and training sessions were strategically located around the trade show which enabled attendees to pass by exhibitors to and from workshops.  Valuable attendee feedback and positive comments also revealed the following:

  • The variety of classes received very high marks.
  • Attendees praised the trade show, enjoyed the introduction of new products, and the ability to spend quality time visiting with industry suppliers.
  • Safety training offered at an extremely affordable rate.
  • Great value.
  • Sessions introduced new ideas and different points of view.
  • Networking opportunities.
  • Safety laws and in-depth information.
  • Inexpensive compliance certification sessions.

Note:  More than 85 percent of the registrations were comprised of superintendents, project engineers, supervisors, safety directors, foremen and owners.

Industry Stakeholders Are Cordially Invited - The addition of the VIP Forum was implemented to the Expo program as an enhancement, by-invitation-only program, and was developed to encourage participation by owners, CEOs, principals and industry Jerry Jackson Mike Bolen Jeff Drake #1 E92V5239stakeholders to engage in topics most relevant to the building and construction trades. The VIP Forum topic, Construction Crises:  “Manpower & Materials” – The Forum featured an evening reception – in partnership with Dan Kennedy, Publisher of the Sacramento Business Journal, an industry roundtable discussion featuring Jerry Jackson, III, Chairman of FMI; Michael Bolen, Chairman & CEO, McCarthy Building Companies, Inc.; and Curt Gomes, President, Pacific Coast Supply LLC.  The Forum provided a relaxed atmosphere where owners, upper management, CEOs and developers were treated to a timely keynote and high-energy panel discussion of construction-related issues.  The occasion provided incentive to all exhibitors as well with an unparalleled opportunity to meet, network, and converse one-on-one with the construction company decision-makers.  Suppliers saw this as a wonderful occasion to meet with the region’s building industry stakeholders plus the advantage of premium networking time to re-connect with peers and colleagues and to develop new business relationships in the midst of this highly-targeted building industry group.  This opportunity was essential to Expo vendors, from a marketing perspective to reach prospects directly as well as establishing professional relationships with new clients not previously contacted, and just as important, having the client see the product and visualize the services in a relaxed and conducive environment.

The End Goal - The Safety Expo in only its second year of existence effectively brought affordable safety education to thousands throughout Northern California.  Companies that participated in 2005 reported that many of their workers came back to the workplace to provide tailgate trainings and mini-safety sessions on what they had learned.  Other companies duplicated safety handouts and training material which they were able to implement in their own safe practices.
